To sleep more soundly and awake refreshed, start by controlling the light in your bedroom! Light regulates our body's internal clock and affects our sleep quality and patterns.

By design, the human body sleeps better in darkness; any light source can disrupt our slumber. Light sources such as streetlights, electronics and even the moon can wreak havoc on our body's natural circadian rhythm. The presence of light suppresses the release of melatonin, the hormone that regulates our sleep-wake cycle.

The impact of light on sleep is particularly noticeable in the evening when the body is preparing for sleep. Exposure to bright lights before bedtime can trick the body into thinking it's still daytime, making it harder to fall asleep. Experts recommend keeping your bedroom as dark as possible to improve sleep quality.

However... a too-dark bedroom offers another set of problems!

A lack of light in the morning can make it harder to wake up and feel alert. Exposure to natural sunlight triggers the production of cortisol, a hormone that helps us feel alert and awake.
